Placitas and the Santa Fe Trail - Lecture & Lunch:
Ancient trails connected Placitas to Sandia and San Felipe Pueblos in the Rio Grande Valley. Wagon roads went through the mountains to La Madera and Golden. You will meet Jose Librado Gurule (a descendant of one of the first families of Las Placitas and early traveler on the Santa Fe Trail) through a chataqua by Gabriel Sahd - as well as his grandson who lives in Placitas today. Learn how the wagons started in Bernalillo, came through Placitas to pick up workers, then north to Las Vegas to join caravans headed for Missouri. You will receive a copy of Lou Bachen's story and enjoy a traditional New Mexico lunch. Meet at the Placitas Post Office and we'll carpool to the site. Cost $10; reservations please: 771-4007.

Venture out into the fantastic landscape of the Diamond Tail Ranch northeast of Placitas for a morning of hiking and natural history. Meet at the Placitas Post Office and we'll carpool to the site.

Annual Placitas Star Party:
Join members of the Albuquerque Astronomical Society to learn the constellations, stars and planets in our night sky. Telescopes will be provided. Homesteads Village, 221 Hwy 165. A beautiful crescent Moon will be in the western sky most of the night.

Placitas Open Space Trail Building:
We'll be joined by a crew of trail specialists from the City of Albuquerque, and will continue work on constructing new trails and closing old roads in the Las Huertas Creek area. This work is part of LPA's continuing efforts to assist the City of Albuquerque in implementing the Management Plan for the Placitas Open Space. Las Placitas and City of Albuquerque will provide tools, drinks, snacks for this event. Please wear sturdy work clothes, and bring work gloves, a sun hat, extra water, and some rain gear. The Open Space is beautiful this time of year, and your participation helps to assure the viability of the Placitas Open Space! Meet at the Placitas Post Office and car pool to the site.
